How should I wear my face mask?

It is important to understand the ‘correct’ way of wearing a mask. Wearing a mask can be effective only when one covers his/her face properly. It is important for the mask to come up, close to the bridge of the nose, all the way down under the chin. Tightening the masks with the help of the straps and avoiding any gaps is extremely essential to to use the mask effectively. Hence, a perfect fitted mask is very important. 

Masks are effective only when you wear them properly. The following steps can be followed to achieve the most effective use of masks-

  • Wash your hands for about 20 seconds with soap and water, before touching or putting on the mask.
  • Make sure your entire nose and mouth are covered when you put on the mask.
  • Avoid touching the mask while you’re out- this can contaminate it.
  • In public settings, do not take off the mask.
  • To take off the mask when you return, until the mask from the back, don’t touch the mask from the front side.
  • Wash the mask immediately if it is a reusable one, and in case of a single use mask, dispose it immediately in a closed bin. 

Why wear a mask?

To flatten the curve and limit the spread of the virus is the primary objective these days for every citizen. Masks safeguard one another by minimizing the chance of spread of droplets released while talking, coughing or sneezing. Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand cleaning with alcohol based hand rubs or simply with soap and water.

Wearing a mask is vital when one goes out of the house. It is essential to wear a mask especially when one has a fever, cough or any other respiratory symptom. Wearing a mask is also important if one has come in contact with any COVID-19 positive patient or someone with similar symptoms. Wearing a mask at grocery stores, pharmacies, supermarkets etc is essential to avoid contact with any a-symptomatic individual too. Healthcare workers and other front line workers are the ones who are most prone to contracting the virus. Wearing N-95, N-99. KN95 masks are key ‘weapons’ to protect themselves. When visiting a clinic or hospital, it is recommended to wear a mask for limiting contact with pathogens and contagions too. Several cities have even made it compulsory to wear a mask when stepping out of the house.
