Why should we wear face masks?
Nothing is constant, but change! It is inevitable! The year 2020 has brought with it a new 'normal' in our lives. Just like we pull out our coats and scarves every winter, now it will become essential to wear a mask as soon as one steps out of the doorway to run daily errands, go to school or work. After ample practice of social distancing, it is time to pull out our next 'tool' from our 'toolbox' to combat the virus. It is time to make a transition towards a more sustainable mitigation strategy. As per Prof. David Heymann of W.H.O., masks can be more effective than social distancing. Masks safeguard one another, by shrinking the chance of spread of droplets while talking, coughing, sneezing immensely. Today, masks are our sole weapon, to not only protect ourselves, but also others in the community. Masks, most crucially can prevent a-symptomatic carriers from inadvertently infecting others, hence avoiding further spread of the virus. They may present a form of 'virtue signaling' and reflect a 'new' social behavior that is admittedly anecdotal, but nonetheless telling. The FDA states- "If 50% of the population wears a mask, the virus transmission gets reduced by half. Moreover, if 80% of the population wears a mask, the virus gets 'essentially eliminated'."
"At the end of the day, the answer is simple- For the greater good of our community!"
